Olia Lialina has for long been active in the preservation and restoration of websites from GeoCities, the once hugely popular early internet’s hosting service and web community. The “Morbid_curiosity14” website was created in early April 2003, and was abandoned on July 20th that same year. When the GeoCities platform was shuttered in 2009, all its contents - 38 million pages - were nearly lost, and so was “Morbid_curiosity14”. A group of archivist managed to rescue nearly a terabyte of pages prior to the shutdown, freely sharing these “pirated” data as a torrent. Olia Lialina began working with the archive as part of her reconsideration of the cultural value of “Digital Folklore”, the amateur web practices that make up a significant but much-derided part of internet culture. Lialina’s “Morbid_curiosity14” screencast is for all the girls who were online in early 2000s, making “dollz” and web pages.
