“Prima Lux” is Jon Rafman’s first EP. The choral music in this album was entirely created with the assistance of A.I. To Gen Xers it might bring back memories of Napster, Limewire, Soulseek and pirated music at the dawn of peer-to-peer culture. Back then the circulation of unauthorized songs was limited to a small number of amateurs, who would spend sleepless nights freely sharing copies of their favorite CDs through their home computers. Today, machine learning algorithms are silently trained on huge datasets featuring millions of songs previously published. The original authors are uncredited and uncompensated, and for the most part are unaware of the process. Once distributed and unregulated piracy has become institutionalized, this time at an unprecedented mass scale and centralized, with a handful of tech giants benefiting from it. And yet, as pioneer A.I. composer Holly Herndon points out “the creative possibilities there are fascinating and will change art forever. Artists have to figure out the terms and tech.”
